On New Years Day in 2013, Julie Nowell snagged the url for the BLUNTmoms website and, long story short, the rest is history. Within three days of its creation, BLUNTmoms had 150 fans on Facebook. Today, that number has climbed to more than 60,000.

And right now, at this very moment, you’re sharing in another landmark milestone: our 3000th post. Three-thousand stories have been shared with readers around the world – people who have laughed together, cried together, nodded together, or scratched their heads and said “what-the-fuck” together. As we’ve gotten older, so too have our writers and readers. We’ve moved away from topics about new parenthood and shifted our focus toward parenting tweens, teens, and even college-aged children. Who knows… maybe someday in the future, you’ll watch us morph into BLUNTgrandmas.

BLUNTmoms is and has always been a community that is inclusive to women (and even men) from all walks of life. Over the past five years, the stories they’ve shared with us have offered an open window into another’s point of view and unique life experience. Through their words, we’ve learned that (aside from Trump supporters) we’re not so different from one another. We’re all people who are raising other people and figuring out life as it comes – one day at a time. And doing the best that we can.

There is something to be said for the camaraderie found in this place, where writers have the balls to speak up about the things that are really going on inside of their heads. Even when those thoughts are ugly. Even when they hurt. Parenting is rewarding, but it’s also hard fucking work. It’s confusing, it’s terrifying, and it’s a shit-screaming riot. Regardless, we never hesitate to tell it like it is because if we can’t do that… then what the hell is the point?

That kind of brutal honesty is what first drew me to this site. I became a cadre writer three and half years ago, seemingly out of nowhere since my first three stories for BLUNTmoms were written anonymously. The editor-in-chief, Magnolia Ripkin, invited me to join the team, not realizing that her invitation would change the entire course of my career. Where writing was once a hobby, a thing I enjoyed but never did much of anything with, it has become my full-time career. I will forever be grateful for her confidence in me.

Our cadre writers are a ride-or-die tribe of women who offer their unconditional support to one another come hell or high water, and that’s an incredibly rare gift in today’s world. We extend that support to all of our contributors, and to our readers by association.

We may not be women actively working in politics but make no mistake: we are a group of political bitches. We do not hesitate to express our raw views on the current world events, we call out racism, misogyny, liars, homophobia and every other fucking toxic shit out there.

As a result, BLUNTmoms has received numerous (and highly entertaining) comments about our political stance. We won’t back down. Ever. We are fierce feminists, strong mothers, and courageous women, and we are unapologetic about our opinions or the words we use to spell them out. Love us or hate us, this is who we fucking are.

Defiant. Edgy. Headstrong. Clever. Profane. Honest. Direct. Surprisingly hilarious.

I compare BLUNTmoms to a rare and vintage whisky. We’re a unique brew of ingredients derived from a medley of candid voices carefully hand-picked from exotic locations throughout the world. We’re complex yet beautifully balanced, with unmistakable notes of sass, integrity, candor, sarcasm, and personal truth. We share the stories that only we can tell, for better or for worse, delivered with our signature BLUNTmoms kick.

And I’ll pour it for you straight, no ice and no chaser: we’re not for everyone.

But for those who believe in equality, for those who believe women should have the right to choose, for those who would spit in the faces of Nazis and the alt-right, for those who believe love is love is love, for those who believe that women can swear like sailors and still be fucking ladies: welcome home and congratulations.

You’ve found your people.

Author

A lover of lapsang souchong tea, unnaturally-colored hair, and Oxford commas, Alison’s stories are written with a signature blend of humor and brutal honesty. She often jokes that she became a writer so she could speak to the masses without actually having to TALK to them face to face, but words are indeed her greatest strength. She revels in weaving them together to tell an entertaining story, rouse laughter, offer reassurance, provide sympathy, or just to give the world a piece of her mind.
