This is an archived post, oroginally published in April.  We are sharing it again because we like it. And we want to.
And this is our site and we can do what we want…
but, we still hope you like it too!

Tonight, I painted my son’s toenails because he asked me to. When he went out to show off his “new” nails, he was told they were ugly. He returned to me with a lowered chin, clearly feeling ugly. “Please take it off, Mom. I’m ugly.”

You aren’t ugly. The words used were ugly. You are beautiful and so are your toes.

My son made a choice to ask me to paint his toes.

chose to paint them. Someone else chose to use words to make those choices seem “stupid”

And fucking nail polish comes off.

If my son wants to wear nail polish, I honor that choice to express himself (his favorite uncle does it so therefore he wants to)
If my son wants to wear his sister’s tutu and dress like a princess, that’s also his choice.

He looks adorable. It makes him a boy in a costume. There’s no hidden meaning. No fucking agenda to get gay marriage passed as law. It’s a tutu.

If my son wants to wear my lipstick while I get ready to go out with my husband on date night, I will choose to teach him how to pucker his lips so I can apply it right.
Then ask him to kiss my mirror.

Because it’s adorable.

Clothes can come off. Makeup can be removed. Words can stay inside your heart and head forever.

Before you talk to my children, choose your words wisely. Or I’m left to make a few choices of my own.

  1. I would freakin lose it if someone did that to my child. LOSE. IT. Ugly and kids – it just doesn’t exist.

  2. its shit like that, that proves my point that the human race is headed down the tubes. Next time me thinks a throat punch is in order.

  3. Your son is lucky to have you. Too bad the other kid doesn’t have a mom like you too.

You tell him that my hubby goes to the spa with me and gets a pedicure WITH polish! usually blue or green. My girls LOVE it. So do the guys on his hockey team! YOU BE YOU!

  4. funny when steven tyler does it girls think its sexy. I say your son is lucky to live in a society where nobody (should) cares about things like boys wearing polish.

  5. Painted toes are my standard issue. Pedicures every 3-4 weeks for the past five years. as a forty year old married guy, everybody has a comment. My usual response is that there is no discount at the salon if you don’t get the polish. But the reality is that I just like how they look. I’ve heard all of the negative close minded comments and names, often in front of my 2 boys. They have both questioned me about it and what the comments mean, we have turned it into a teaching tool about being you’re own person and doing what you want and being in charge of you’re body. We have chosen not to make it a sexual topic as it was never a factor in my decision to paint them.
