Dinks.

Many of us were Dinks once, maybe some of you still are, although if you’re on this site I highly doubt it!.

My hubby and I are not Dinks. We stopped being dinks almost 16 years ago and never looked back. We were off on the adventure of a lifetime!

Parenting! Oh glory days! Weekends in, no weeknight cocktail parties, early nights, earlier mornings. Our besties, however, have not followed us to the promised land, still!

For 16 years we’ve been invited to a late dinner on a wednesday night (sorry, can’t, Brownies), brunch on sunday (can’t, soccer), concerts on Thursday nights (can’t, kids have swimming lessons).

“Get a sitter! ” They would say!

“Wanna pay?”  We’d reply!

The invites got fewer and further between, and we’d end up seeing them for evenings in at our house. Always a great moment when you wake up at 2am next to your sweaty toddler, stumble down the stairs to find your guests had gone home 4 hours ago.

So finally our kids are old enough to be home alone for extended periods of time, and we feel so free! We can go out, but there are still soccer practices and games to work around.

Our besties are happy we can all play together.

But they still have no intentions of filling their flexible, spontaneous lives with little time dictators, which became abundantly clear when we invited them to our cabin for the night.

“Are your kids going to be there?”

Sigh,    yes. Maybe we should wait a couple more years til they move out and try again.

  1. Oh my god, I was a TOTAL DINK but it was such a long, long time ago!

Now that I’m now a SMWK (Single Mom w/ Kids), I actually think I may have reverted back to my DINK-y ways. When my kids are with their dad I enjoy having “adult only” time (no, not code for Swinging) and spend time with friends who either don’t have kids or whose kids are with their former partners.

But when I’m with my kids, I’m full-on so I don’t feel guilty about how I spend my “free” time.

When we were dinks, the term didn’t exist and we wanted very much to be parents. We were successful twice, at having children, not necessarily at being good parents!!!Now we are retgrads—retired grandparents with a dog! There is nothing more precious than our children and grandchildren…and our dog!!
