We BLUNTmoms spend a lot of time together, digitally. And so, the most logical next step was to create a BLUNTIE book club.
We were thrilled to work with Raincoast books to read and review their new release “Love Letters to the Dead” by….  I mean, they do say that most women would rather read in bed, than have sex . . . right?

Check out our reviews of the book via our authors sites below, and hopefully our snippets will encourage you to grab a copy for yourself the next time you are looking for an escape!

“Every sentence is a slice from my teenage years; the naked honesty made me cringe and then feel all those familiar feelings long buried – hopeless, hopeful and everything in between. I listened to a lot of Nirvana while reading this – a perfect soundtrack of love, loss and the sounds we make when we don’t know what tomorrow will reveal.” — Brooke Takhar

“It’s an engaging read, and a sympathetic one for people of my generation. Through it all, there’s a very strong musical backbeat that’s hinted by the letters and picked up by our thoughts: glory trapped by tar and vice, reaching for the light.” — Anne Radcliffe

“As an avid reader, I dream of the day when my daughters will fall in love with the written word. This book is exactly the kind of piece I imagine me sharing with them as teenagers. Discussing hard topics, sharing bits of bites of my own youth, talking about what is going on in theirs. We need more books like this.” — Lynn Morrison

“Reading her letters feels like reading someone’s journal. You just can’t stop yourself. Seeing into someone else’s thoughts is so addicting, which makes Love Letters To The Dead addicting as well.” — Brooke Berry

“Love letters to the dead beautifully captures the idealism and naivety of childhood coupled with the untainted and often profound realisations we make through our metamorphosis to adulthood. I was able to travel back to a state of mind I thought lost forever.”  — Cordelia Newlin de Rojas

“Although the book is an easy read that flows quickly, the subject matter is important and full of emotion. Through the letters that Laurel writes to famous people who died too soon, we explore the different ways in which the characters grieve Laurel’s sister May’s death. We also learn how self-destructive guilt and anger are, and only when the characters begin to open up to each other can they begin to heal.” — Tara Wilson

It is a super easy read, one that you will most likely find yourself swept away with and before you know it the wee hours will be flashing on your alarm clock indicating you now only have 3 hours of sleep before work. Or maybe that’s just me. I became very familiar with the term “just one more page” and then I would see Dear River Phoenix again and yet another “one more” would happen again. — Traci Clark

  1. There are so many great books out there! I think I would take the Kite Runner with me. It’s a book I don’t mind re-reading over and over.

  2. If I were stuck on a desert island .. I’d want A.J. Jacob’s “The Know-It All”. It’s broken into fun, short chunks and is funny – plus, I’ve read it on and off for at least 5 years now and have not grown tired of it.

  3. I would want Memoirs of an Imagnary Friend from the above list or the Bible if I could choose anything.

  4. If I were stuck on a desert island .. All the books i would *like* to have would be elsewhere & I would probably end up with a copy of How To Survive In The Woods, which would be little use in a desert, but I could at least appreciate the irony haha.

If I was stuck on the island I would want pages from every book ,as there are so many great reads!

  7. If I could choose any one book, I would choose The Complete Works of Shakespeare. It would keep me well read for a long time 🙂

  8. Although I’d love to take a fiction book to a deserted island, I think I’d rather have a survival book with me!

This much I know is true by Wally Lamb would be my choice if I was stuck on a deserted island
