where’s my tiara?

There is nothing better than waking up in the morning and choosing what to wear.

No, seriously. There isn’t!

We are making a choice of what we are going to display to the world that day, who we are going to be. HOW we are going to be.

And yes, I agree, what we are on the outside doesn’t necessarily match with what is on the inside, but isn’t that sometimes the point?

I can often get sucked into the humdrum routine of black and grey. Those solid standbys that we all eventually succumb to. Grey shirt and jeans, black shirt and jeans, black shirt, Grey jeans; you can see the problem.

It doesn’t make me feel special tossing on hubby’s old hoodie. And I want to feel special. I deserve to feel special.

And so I ask: when did we get too old to dress up?

What moment was it that told us “No, you can NOT wear a princess dress today”? What part of our life turned our wardrobe black and grey?

I look at my kids, the joy in my sons face as he sprints around the house in his Spider-man Costume.  He is filled with superhero thoughts, and super hero ideas.  He IS Spider-man.

And my daughters, as they lift their Mermaid tails while walking down the stairs or delicately place one foot in front of the other and keep their shoulders square so as not to dislodge their tiara.

I want a Tiara.

I want to gaze at my selection of bejeweled dresses and choose to be elegant, like Cinderella, or indescribably comfortable like Jasmine must be in those loose fitting pants.

I want to walk boldly into the grocery store wearing bright yellow, or a deep crimson red, sparkling up and down the aisle as I push my cart and toss in a bag of rice.

I want to step out of the greys and into the rainbow of color. I want to twirl, and float.

I want to walk boldly into the grocery store wearing bright yellow, or a deep crimson red, sparkling up and down the aisle as I push my cart and toss in a bag of rice.

I want to step out of the greys and into the rainbow of colour. I want to twirl, and float.

With three kids now, girls and boys, toddlers and tweens, we have the run range of Disney. From Halloween to weekend playdates and sometimes even the old “FINE, you can wear the costume to school”, the magic of dressing up has been consistent in our life.

And as a parent, it is one thing I truly admire in my kids; their ability to live fully in the moment and be who they want to be, anytime, anywhere.

So, we will keep the superhero costume on for another few days, and will continue getting the girls beautiful dresses and encouraging them to be Superheroes, Princesses, Pirates and more.

That one dream of being anything we choose, (yes, even a Princess) is one dream worth keeping alive.
