It turns out that there’s more than one “back to the future” event to be all excited about in 2015, and this one doesn’t involve crying about how you don’t have your hoverboard yet.

I was 18 years old when Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys was released on video. My then-boyfriend and I white-knuckled the couch as we leaned forward, hardly blinking through the final minutes of the film. I remember so clearly how when the movie ended, we swung to face each other, totally agog.

Like, literally, we could see each other’s tonsils. That’s how agog we were.

There was nothing to do but rewatch the movie again. Right. That. Night. If you’ve watched the movie before, then you probably understand exactly the reason why.

It’s hard to believe that 12 Monkeys celebrates it’s 20th anniversary this year… that movie was such a profoundly impactful one. That’s the film that I decided that Brad Pitt should only ever take roles where he’s crazy. It completely changed my opinion of Terry Gilliam as a director. And it proved that you can do real, hardcore science fiction without a ginormous special-effects budget.

Imagine my glee when I heard that Shaw Media acquired the rights to 12 Monkeys, has finished and wrapped it’s shooting (completed quite stealthily over last summer… I don’t know how I managed not to hear about this!), and is planning to release a new spin-off series on Showcase based on this dark version of a near-future trying to eradicate its past?

Aaron Stanford (Nikita, X-Men: The Last Stand) will be starring as the time-traveler Cole, trying to save the world. He’ll be joined by Amanda Schull, Noah Bean, Kirk Acevedo, Tom Noonan and Emily Hampshire.

No stakes have ever been so high. Oh, and if you haven’t seen 12 Monkeys, then no excuses… go rent it and prepare to immerse yourself in this awesome, mind-bending paradox for the release of the show.

I can hardly wait!
