Before I had children, when there was such a magical thing as free time, I scrapbooked. I created beautiful remembrances of vacations and significant events, but once my son arrived, I made a scrapbook to reflect his first year, and it was all downhill from there.

I still wanted to commemorate every waking moment, but I didn’t have the time or the energy. I took photos and tried to create digital scrapbooks, but even with that, I gave up after my second child arrived. Between child-rearing and husband-caring, I barely have time for a shower.

With the urge to capture every moment of my kids’ lives still strong within me, I ended up with hundreds of photos and videos that lay fallow on my computer. Then, I discovered an app called One Day.

The premise is, you pick a topic, and it generates a set of 10 questions. You ask your kids, on video, those questions and then the app turns the answers into a movie.

great apps for families,

My kids, in second grade and kindergarten this year, were my guinea pigs. The topic I chose was Back to School. The questions were simple, like what will you wear to the first day of school, who do you hope is there, who do you sit next to, and do you want your parent to walk you in to school.

There was nothing exceptionally hilarious in their responses. While it wasn’t one of those “Kids say the darndest things” sessions, I found myself smiling, laughing, and tearing up because they were so wholly themselves.

My son and daughter interacted like only siblings could do. They hugged, poked at each other, and finished each other’s sentences. I find myself choked up at the memory of the video because it is all too much. My sweet babies, caught in a moment in time.

The first question was, “What grade will you be going into?” My son, ever eager to grow up said, “Third grade,” before remembering that he will actually be in second grade this year. My daughter couldn’t remember and needed her brother’s help. He mouthed the answer to her and she was able to bashfully reply, “Kindergarten.”

And then there was, “Are you going to miss me on the first day?” My daughter, sucking up to my husband said, “I miss Daddy already.” My son, now my favorite child, said he would miss me more because, “You (my husband) weren’t a big part of me being born… Who came out of who’s tummy?”

Yes, I did do all the work and should get all of the love.

My favorite was probably, “What do you think parents do while kids are at school all day?” My daughter thought that parents do what kids do. She said, “They work, and when their parents pick them up, they have to show them the work they did.” My son thinks we, “Work, and then if they get done early, they come home and clean.”

fun memory apps, great apps

Sadly, he’s not too far off of the truth.

I know that one day they will be grown up with kids of their own, so I want to savor these moments, where they are innocent and young. Well, young at least.

My husband suggested I play the video when my kids graduate high school but I don’t know if I would be able to handle it. Oh, who am I kidding? I’ll be a mess that day no matter what. Until then, I have more questions to ask my kids via One Day.
