download (54)Why did you have kids? Seriously? Hey you- over there!!! And you. HELLO? You can’t even hear me can you?

At what point did you make the decision to ignore your kids? We are at an ice hockey training session and your 6 year old has just scored a goal. Did you see it? Do you care? For the last 30 minutes you have been sat in the spectators stand staring at your I phone, typing away something or other.

And you – yes you. The one watching a downloaded movie on your phone while your 7 year old masters a new trick on the ice. What do you say when ‘little Johnny’ asks at the end – “did you see me mom? Dad ? Did you???”. And you say “Oh yes darling – you were awesome”!!  LIAR. No – you didn’t. You wouldn’t even know if your kid had left the ice. None of you have looked up once.

Why the hell are you even here?

So- excuse me a moment whilst I spend the whole training session staring at my phone writing this.

Oh hang on, the training session is over. My son is going to ask if he was good. How do I know? I have to make some shit up now. It’s not as if I actually watch him. Come on. This is MY hour of peace.

Oh……. I see!

Ok then,….as you were!

There is a school of thought that parenting from a place of benign neglect has advantages. If my kids think I am hanging on their every move or accomplishment, they will follow the logical path that ends in taking their mother utterly for granted. If they have to work a little harder to earn approval and attention, it prepares them better for the real world. Nobody gets ribbons just for showing up in University and the work force. That being said, playing angry birds is so much more interesting than watching pee wee hockey.
