As much as I rant and rave about not getting help with dishes, and “why is it my job… I’m not the maid!” I have to admit that I secretly don’t want anyone to touch my dishes. No one does it right. I’m a control freak. My husband takes an approximate hundred years to get the kitchen cleaned up because he takes a break every 3 dishes. And he gets water everywhere in his elaborate rinsing routine. I would have documented written proof of this if the restaurant he worked at hadn’t burned down. You’ll just have to trust me on this one.
When I am away, he has the kids doing the dishes, which in the past meant lots of hand-washing. And me cringing at the thought that OMG they didn’t wash them properly and we’re all going to die!
And it’s not just children I don’t trust… I don’t let anyone near my dishes. Did you know there are people who hand-wash dishes and DON’T RINSE!?!?! If you’ve ever had a soapy glass of water, chances are one of these type of people did your dishes. It’s really hard to keep track of which dishes you need to pull out of the cupboard and smash re-wash after your guests leave when you’ve had a few glasses of wine. But the wine keeps you from screaming “WHAT are you DOING?” in that shrilly voice that etiquette experts say is poor form to use with your guests.
I was going to solve these problems by getting a locking door for my kitchen or some kind of guard alligator. But instead I got a new dishwasher. The Frigidaire Gallery OrbitClean™ dishwasher holds my entire dinner party worth of dishes – including the dessert course! It even has Delicate-Care™ Soft Grips to hold stemware in place! So there’s no excuse for ruining my dishes hand-washing.
I have been trying to loosen up on my control of the kitchen clean-up so that my kids don’t become useless sloths who don’t know how to do a dish when they move out. The good news is that my new dishwasher holds way more dishes through some kind of wizardry due to good design. And it gets things clean the first time without the amount of rinsing that my old one needed, with the OrbitClean™ Spray Arm, which provides 4X better water coverage than a traditional spray arm. So I don’t have to cringe about the exact dish placement or the fact that people keep putting knives coated in peanut butter in my dishwasher. Plus with the 30-Minute Quick Wash we can run loads more often – if they load it wrong their way and there isn’t enough room for everything, we don’t have to wait very long to run another load. I’m no longer pining for a second dishwasher in the butler’s pantry. Which is a good thing since we don’t have a butler’s pantry. It would have to go on the deck outside and I have a hunch that the raccoons prefer to hand-wash the dishes.

The kids and I had the stomach flu last week which not only meant that I was tempted to rely on the raccoons to watch the children and load the dishwasher, but that I was happy to take full advantage of the Sanitize option for each load that I ran, to blast those germs away. I only wish cleaning the rest of the house was so easy!
And that’s how you relax in the kitchen.
